I.I.S. "Archimede" - Modica (Italy)
Our School I.I.S. ARCHIMEDE was founded in the year 1866.
It's a technical secondary school with about 750 students, aged 14-19, a five-year curriculum with five main sections: Economics (final title: accountant), Tourism (final title: expert in Tourism), Information Technology (final title: accountant and I.T. programmer), Surveying (final title: chartered surveyor); moreover, a three- year section for adults education. In the first two years, school provides a general education (humanistic and scientific subjects); in the last three years teaching and education include job orientated subjects, that is more time for specific subjects (e.g.: Economics, Law, Maths, four foreign European languages, I.T. and computer studies, and literary-historical subjects, as well). Our main facilities are a big historical library, multimedial I.T. / language laboratories, multimedial activeboards in all classrooms, internet, a modern on-line devices.
We have a documentation system for the teachers and students' families; opportunities of traineeships and contacts with the local businesses, together with school experiences on a European level.
As to the social context, we perceive some signals and indicators of disadvantaged situations: for example, families with low or single income; some students with special needs (DSA/BES), or belonging to migrant families or few of them even leaving school earlier, without completing the secondary education. Because of that our interest to take part in these ambitious and amazing projects.
Our students are generally from the city of Modica, a center of 52,000 inhabitants, whose economy is based mainly on agriculture and the service sector, but there are also several small and medium-sized craft and industrial companies.
Modica bases its economy and its development in the tourism sector, in handicraft quality products and agriculture, in trades and service industries.
As for the economic and socio-cultural status of students' families, the result is a predominantly lower-middle level. The school, therefore, is for these youngsters a great opportunity for social advancement and personal growth
Together with Economics, Information Technology is one of the main subjects studied in our school. Therefore, our students are quite familiar with the language of computer programming and learn how to create a website. As a matter of fact students from the fifth year often choose topics related to online shopping for the interdisciplinary presentation at their school leaving exams
Our Graphics and Communication course is designed to lead our students to:
• realization of multimedia products;
• realization photographic and audiovisual;
• implementation and management of the network communication software systems
Relevant projects and activities, carried on in our school have been:
- CREDIT IN BANKS AND NATIONAL MAIL - understanding more about the services offered by banks and by the Italian Post to compare them; knowing the investment products (either short term and medium / long-term) offered; comparing activities and organization of the Italian Post Office and banks.
- BANKING AND FINANCE - getting inside the world of banks; project supported by UniCredit bank.
- CADASTRE PROCEDURES - getting into the main procedures and activities of the Italian Cadastre (PreGeo and DocFa). - LIBERAPP-LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE — Project funded by the Italian Ministry of Education to realize a software managing school libraries.
- OTZENHAUSEN SEMINAR 2017 - Mobility project of students in Germany.
We have enjoyed a challenging experience which has provided us a lot of knowledge and at the same time very touching moments with all our partners.
