I.E.S. Murgi - El Ejido (Spain)

Our  secondary school is in El Ejido, Almeria (Andalusia) and offers a variety of teachings such as E.S.O (the Compulsory Secondary Education), Bachillerato (the Post-Compulsory Secondary Education) and Middle and Upper Grade Proffesional Training Courses.
Our high school has more than 900 hundred students every year coming from different social and cultural backgrounds. An important feature of our school is the high percentage of students who come from Africa, East Europe and South-America. This circumstance enriches our daily coexistence but at the same time it requires a series of special actions on the part of the governing board and the teacher staff in order to reach the integration of our students in school life. This high school also has a “Temporary Classroom for Linguistic Adaptation” (A.T.A.L.), which offers the foreign students the possibility to improve their knowledge of the Spanish language.
As regards family background, the traditional nuclear family prevails although there are other kinds of families with divorced or single parents. With the exception of a small percentage of parents who make a living from liberal professions and some others who work in the service sector, it is necessary to state that most of them work in the intensive agriculture under plastic (greenhouses), being this kind of job regarded as the main socioeconomic driving force of the city.
The needs of our school were:
• Help students develop digital literacy
• Start student exchanges with other European schools.
• Improve the language skills of students
• For vocational students to practice in computer companies for three months. From March to June.
• Help to manage the student’s accommodation
Our school has been involved in European projects since 2005/2006, for example Leonardo, Movitpro, Erasmus, Erasmus +. In these projects we have sent students and teachers to differents European countries, but we haven't experience in organizing the management of students and visiting teachers.
By participating in these projects, our school has managed to achieve a series of aims, such as: help minimize unemployment, the development of social capital among young people, their autonomy and their ability to participate actively in society; the need for more cohesive and inclusive societies which allow citizens to play an active role in democratic life; awareness of the principle of lifelong learning, linking support for formal, non-formal and informal learning in the fields of education, training and youth as a tool to achieve the above objectives.
We have had some experiences related to the creation of mobile apps because our students have developed different ones  included in Google Play Store, during the courses 15/16 and 16/17 in the I.E.S. Murgi 's Computing Department always with educational purposes. These have been:
• Getting information (educational offer,...) about our Secondary School: Proyecto Ciclos 16. IES Murgi
• Managing the groups cards and photographs in their graduation: Proyecto Orlas16.IES Murgi
• A basic project to switch on/off lights, open the garage of your house from your own workplace:Domotic House
• Ordering meals (breakfast) for teachers and students: Cafeteria Murgi
• Knowing the state of the beaches during the summer in our borough: Playas El Ejido
• Implementation of a basic game: MurgiRunner.
They are really useful and have possibilities of being improved in order to get more effective. Our students will do it, along some courses.
In the elaboration of this project “Mobile apps- Learn today, apply tomorrow” we have counted on the assistance and active participation of a team composed of eighteen teachers who work in our high school and come from different fields of knowledge. They have been grouped into several areas such as Science (Technology, Mathematics and Physics and Chemistry), Languages (English, French and Spanish) and Vocational Training (Information Technology, Automotive Studies and Formation and Labour Orientation). As a result, an important percentage of teachers have been involved in the project.
After the developing of this project we have been able to create a network of collaboration with schools of Europe in order to collaborate with them in the future on the topic of mobile applications; our students and teachers have improved their language and sociocultural training,  knowing other school systems, interests and hobbies of our European peers.
It has been the most wonderful experience that our students could dream.
