IInd A. Mickiewicz High School with Bilingual Forms in Słupsk - SŁUPSK (Poland)
The beginnings of our school date back to the year 1949 when the 11-grade high school. The school was located in a building by Mickiewicza Street, which although built in 1905 still plays its original role. In the school year 1965/66 the 11-grade system of schooling was abandoned and the institution was given the status of a secondary school and the name of Adam Mickiewicz. In 2004 bilingual classes were opened. The thing which the school offers first and foremost is the possibility of attending to the best educational institution in Slupsk. It was confirmed in a recent ranking published by “The Perspektywy” and “The Rzeczpospolita”. According to it the Secondary School of Adam Mickiewicz was ranked in the 16th place in Poland, the 2nd in Pomeranian district and the 1st in Słuspk.
We are the promoters of the United Europe. The School European Club was established in 2000. The members of the club have repeatedly won the Contests of Knowledge of European Union and they deal with propagating competence in the European Union- the countries, their history, geography, famous people, and institutions among other students and their families. Since 1989 we have been constantly a partner in students or teachers exchange programs, starting with international exchanges, via Comenius mobilities and projects, ending up with the Erasmus+. We have a breeding ground for new fresh talent — "Fantazja" choir, which has been awarded many prizes including: Grand Prix in an all-Poland Choir Contest, the Silver Diploma in the National Choir Contest.
The youngsters of our school are offered a possibility to study 6 different languages — English / German + English / German / French / Italian / Spanish / Russian. Among the graduates of the "Mickiewicz" school there are over 81 winners of subject contests and 175 finalists. But we also emphasize the key role of a family background, the right to education for the disabled or the maladjusted. Per their individual needs we deal with particularly talented students as well. No matter their family, social, economic situation, our goal is to provide the students with the access to education, freedom of speech, will and choice, right to live healthily and safely. We also try to prepare them for their future life in modern and multicultural Europe.
"Keeping up with modern Europe" - this is one of the motifs of our actions on a daily basis. We wish to be up - to - date as our students are, we wish to keep up with them in the new world of modern technologies, we finally wish to be their partners in contemporary reality, even if it is to be partly virtual. Even if we think about the age of the youngest of us (all the teachers working at our school) - still, it really highlights the generation gap between us and our students. After all, in today's technological world 5 - 10 years seems to be eternity. That makes us more interested in the effects of undertaken activities; the influence of ICT on today's didactics, motivating students through activities employing their involvement, commitment and creativity.
However, the second field - the teaching itself - cannot be neglected. We hope to improve our language skills, acknowledge new methods and techniques used in modern teaching. We are willing to exchange our teaching experience with teachers from abroad, gathering different materials that can be used later on during our lessons. At the same time taking part
in different projects helps us, teachers face and complete tasks connected with improving our skills and gaining new experience heading to the improvement of the quality of our school.
Additionally, we wish to make our school more attractive and competitive when compared to institutions in our city, province or country. We shall present, and at the same time, we hope to engage other teachers (even from other schools) in our openness towards international communities, sensitivity towards cultural and social diversity, which we can pass to young people - our students. Thanks to work and a kind of cooperation that we have with those people we are so deeply involved in building a team of modern and professional teachers, who successfully bond inside - school actions - increasing the students' results and their creativity present in the extracurricular activities as well.
As for the use of mobile programming codes, this is not part of the IT curriculum, although students have become increasingly interested in it. This is why we shall resort to the knowledge of our IT teachers, as well as the knowledge and practices from other European countries to meet the needs and interest of our students in terms of mobile technology.
AII the teachers are gathered in several cooperating working groups. We meet repeatidly, discussing current issues, unexpected problems or plans for our daily teaching life. Thanks to successful cooperation with and effective support of Microsoft, we are also gathered in Microsoft Showcase School, empowering the students of today to create the world of tomorrow, our students have a chance to attend international bootcamps for teenagers from all our Europe.
We have been also involved in numerous Comenius and Erasmus+ project almost since the beginning of the programs.
