2nd High School of Serres - Serres (Greece)
Our school is the 2nd senior High School in the town of Serres.
With a total of 300 students (15-18 years old) and 35 teachers our school is situated far from the “centres of opportunities”, that is big cities which are centres of educational activities and actions.
At the same time, the region where our school is situated faces to a large degree the aftermath of economic crisis and unemployment. As a consequence of the above emerging economic, social and cultural circumstances in our region make up a challenge for both teachers and students, creating the need for specialized and trained teaching staff, capable of facing the foregoing. Furthermore the inclination of the teaching staff at our school to be active and not passive factors, impose endeavours to continuous professional development within the framework of continuous training and participation in diverse sections and levels of European Union programs.
The exchange of experience, knowledge and opinion with teachers from other European countries, have made up an excellent contribution to the progress of educational skills. Experiencing different European educational environments have supported the European dimension. The educational collaboration of our school with foreign schools has also helped the development of closer bonds not only within our school environment but also in connection with local authorities and collaborating European cities.
As our students, on the other hand , attend a remote provincial school, far —off the big cities with development potential, are not given the chance to take part in actions and activities. Furthermore, because of the economic crisis the students do not have the possibility of transferring and taking part in educational programs far from our city. This deprives them also of opportunities like succeeding in foreign languages (English, French), getting familiarised with new technologies, or getting to know students of the same age from foreign countries. But this project has been the chance to experience diverse manners and customs, ways of life and cultures that will help them to overcome the small circle of life in their region and acquire the awareness of a European citizen.
Despite the adversities, our school has taken part in actions and activities and we are proud of it.
In our school there are many clubs in wich our students participate like:
- Robotics club: Our school has 5 full sets of arduino kits, and the students involved create their own robots and automated systems
-Mobile applications club.
-Debate club etc
Our school took part in the following actions and activities in the recent years:

Our school has participated with its students numerous times in the national ICT contest, the European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO), which is a multidisciplinary, integrated science, practical-based, team competition for EU second level school science students who are sixteen years of age or younger. Also in the debate contest for school students, with exceptional results.
Regarding our school staff, there are 35 teachers in our school, are highly motivated professionals, many of them have postgraduate diplomas, and are fluent in EU languages (English, French,German,Italian).
We organise the mobile applications club, in which we show students basic programming tools, such as “Android Studio”, which has been really useful in the developing of this project that we have enjoyed with other students.
This project has been for us a rewarding experience which has let us work with a technological tool, with all participants and share a lot of good moments with our partners.
